Regal Theatre

Located on Oxford Avenue, just south of E. Roosevelt Boulevard, the Regal Theatre opened on February 28, 1936 with seating for 700. The architect for the Regal Theatre is listed as C. Dingleman. By 1950 it was operated by the A.M. Ellis Theaters Co. chain. The theatre closed in 1967 due to a roof fire caused by a fan.

On today’s tax records it is listed as an amusement center, operating as the Regal Ballroom. It was beautifully restored in 2013, retaining the Streamline Moderne style features, the Regal Ballroom is a full-service banqueting facility.

The Regal was our first movie house we could walk to! Wow! As a kid, each Saturday matinee I came home with a blinding headache! Mother said “I’d ruin my eyes”. Really, it was a zillion kids soaking up all the oxygen as they cheered Hop Along Cassidy and the cartoons! Billy White of Lardner Street.

The Regal Theatre was designed by architect and builder Charles S. Dingleman and opened in 1935 as a neighborhood motion picture and vaudeville theatre. When it closed in 1968, it became the Regal Ballroom. It still boasts its thirty foot ceiling and much of its architectural detail.

There is no connection between this Regal Theatre and today’s Regal Cinemas or the Regal Entertainment Group (REG). The Regal chain was not established until 1989.

If anyone knows in what architectural style the Regal Theatre was designed, please share. Thanks!

They did a complete renovation/restoration in 2013. It’s really beautiful and they’ve kept the original décor – a really nice job! Click on their photo gallery tab for new photos. http://regal-ballroom.com/index.html

The trade press indicates that Dave Supowitz was the architect of the Philly Regal. Grand opening shots February 28, 1936 in photos.
