This two-story theatre was located downtown and was empty for many years. It was starting to be used again in the mid-late 80’s for plays and musicals but it burned to the ground. It was later replaced by a Casey’s General Store which has also been shuttered and remodeled into a restaurant. The Movie Palace is a video rental store located in a strip mall on the western end of town.

In 1963, the Clark was operated by the Armentrout Circuit, Russell Armentrout, president and general manager. Besides the Clark, Armentrout also operated the Clark in Shelbina, MO, the Zoe in Pittsfield, IL and the Clark Drive-In in Summer Hill, IL.

This was where I saw my first movie as a 3-year old child, when my parents took me to see Jungle Book. I’ve been a huge movie/theater fan every since…and it all started here…

The Clark Theatre opened on May 22, 1931. There was a bombing in the lobby of the theatre shortly after opening. Initially the theatre seated 700 but was remodeled in 1949 with seating reduced to 550. The Clark was located on the corner of Georgia St. & 4th St. There is nothing there now.

Per Lisa Ruble: “It (the bombing) happened during the night. The theatre was fixed and opened within the week. No one was ever arrested. Image added.
