Opened by Famous Players on October 24, 1940 with Luise Rainer in “The Great Waltz”. The Garneau Theatre is the only remaining theatre of its style and period in Alberta. Designed by noted Edmonton architect William Blakey, the Garneau Theatre remains one of the city’s most popular theatres, in part due to its proximity to the campus of the University of Alberta, which dominates the neighborhood. It was operated for many years by the Majic Lantern Theatres division of Rainbow Cinemas. The theatre hosts the Edmonton International Film Festival.
It is now operated by the Metro Cinema Society.

October 24th, 1940 grand opening ad has been uploaded in the photo section.
This theatre was originally operated by the Famous Players Canadian Corporation right up to the late 90’s.
This theatre has had some close calls, but it’s good to see it’s still open. I’ve attended a couple films there and it’s a nice, old-school venue.
The Garneau Theatre opened its doors on October 24, 1940 with Luise Rainer in “The Great Waltz” along with an unnamed cartoon and an unnamed crime short.
