The Powell Cinema was built as part of a strip shopping center around 1980. It was a twin that each seated 175. It was closed in the late nineties and the space was converted to retail.

I believe it had three screens at one point. I saw “Return of the Living Dead” here in 1985. The space is now a Knoxville Area Rescue Mission thrift store.

The Powell Twin was always a twin. Consolidated operated the theatre in the 1980’s, and Carmike got it in 1989 through the buyout.

One of the only memories I have of this theater is when I saw “The Pebble and the Penguin” here in 1995.

I think I might have also seen “Once Upon a Forest”, “Toy Story”, and “Muppet Treasure Island” here as well.

A hidden gem. My daycare group as a child would take us to early morning kid’s movies, and this the place I tried my first Astropop and Suicide! Last film I saw there was “Dazed and Confused” in 1993.
