Atlantic Drive-In exterior

The Atlantic Drive-In was located on E. Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor, N.J., close to Pleasantville. It was opened by Walter Reade Theatres Inc. on June 16, 1950, with Alan Ladd in “Whispering Smith” and Kirk Douglas in “My Dear Secretary”. The marquee and name-sign of the theatre featured a ‘flashing’ lighthouse.

The Atlantic Drive-In operated as a second-run theatre screening double bills, and it had a capacity for 900 cars. There was a play area, which included pony rides, and there was a television room.

In 1965 the original drive-in was moved far back from the street following the construction of the Shore Mall. It reopened on July 1, 1966. Later on, the Towne 4 theaters were built in front of the drive-in. The enclosed theaters and the drive-in co-existed until the mid-1980’s, when the drive-in closed. The screen were demolished in 1985. The Towne 4 became the Towne 16 and it too has been demolished.

The theatre was located in Egg Harbor TWP., not Egg Harbor city. The theatre had a Pleasantville address, because EHT had no PO at that time

My family loved the Atlantic Drive In, one of the first movies I remember seeing was The Amityville Horror, I loved the intermission breaks, great memories that I’ll never forget.
