News About This Theater
- Jan 3, 2012 — New life for old theater in Cedar City
This theatre was opened in 1914 as the Thorley Theatre, which it was known until June 15, 1939 when it was renamed Avalon Theatre. In 1940 it was renamed Utah Theatre.
It was remodeled in 1946 and renamed Cedar Theatre and was twinned in the early-1970’s. The theatre was operated by Westates Theatres until 2005.
After laying unused for seven years, it has been renovated and under new ownership as a ‘soft’ reopening July 12, 2012 with screenings of “Rio” & “Gone in 60 Seconds”. It fully reopened in August 2012. It was closed in 2015. By 2022 the lobby was in use as a gourmet brownie store and by 2024 the auditorium was used for country dancing.

There is a new email that you can get ahold of me at with your ideas of how this can be turned into a community theater/venue for Cedar City, Utah.

Looks like it’s still closed. The theater is at the end of Main Street in this circa 1940s photo.

I do not know if that building is still standing. so much has been done with that property across the street from this location.
The theater is going for almost 500 thousand. Personally I do not think it is worth quite that much.
DEATH WISH 2 was playing,Not “Death Wish”.Put the 2 up guys.
Summer is coming. I hope that I can get the funding to buy the theater and make it something awesome for Cedar City, Utah
This beautiful theater is sadly closed and the posters still list films from 2015.
Launched as the Thorley Theatre in 1914. On June 15, 1939, the Thorley Theatre became the Avalon Theatre. In 1940, the name was changed again to the Utah Theatre. After closing for remodeling in 1946, the theatre relaunched as the Cedar Theatre which it retained until it was twinned.
As of late 2022 a gourmet brownie store called ganache–d has opened in the theatre’s lobby. It’s unclear what use it being made, if any, of the theatre spaces.
As of September2024, the Brownie Shop is still there. The marque also announces Country Dancing on Thursday nights.
