The Plaza Theater in Pittsburgh was opened April 7, 1917 with George Beban in “His Sweetheart”. It closed as a movie theatre November 30, 1958 with Paul Newman in “Cat on a Hot Tim Roof” and Mickey Rooney in When Andy Harvey Comes Home". It reopened as a live theatre on March 9, 1973 with “The Fantasticks”.
On December 21, 1979 it reopened as a movie theatre. It was twinned and reopened May 19, 1989 as the Plaza II. It was closed December 3, 1998 with “Rush Hour” & “Antz”. It is now a Starbucks.

I remember coming here as a teenager. It must have closed around the late 1990s.
Actually, I remember seeing “Pulp Fiction” here when I was 17.

A photo and floor plan of the Plaza Theatre appeared in the August, 1920, issue of the professional journal Architecture. It can be seen online here, courtesy of the Internet Archive. The caption attributes the design of the Plaza Theatre to architect Harry S. Bair, who also designed Pittsburgh’s Regent Theatre.
At some point (70s-80s) It became a 2 screen. The last Movie I saw there was an awfull “Nightmare on Elm St.” I forgot which on but it was “3D” and of course really bad =)
The Plaza was DARK for many years. It was reopened in December 1979 with “Roller Boogie.”
Opened on April 7, 1917 with “His Sweetheart”, starring George Beban. Last day of first-run operation was apparently November 30, 1958 with “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof” and “When Andy Hardy Comes Home”. Reopened for stage productions on March 9, 1973 with “The Fantasticks”. Reopened as a movie theater December 21, 1979 with “Roller Boogie”. Closed for renovations after February 24, 1989; reopened less than three months later on May 19 with two screens (and renamed “Plaza II”) with “Rain Main” and “Full Moon In Blue Water”. Final day of operation was December 3, 1998 with “Rush Hour” and “Antz”.
