Originally opened as the Pathe Palace on 31st March 1923 with 1,778 seats. In 1928 it played Abel Gance’s “Napoleon”. On 10th September 1939 it became the Cine Palacio Pathe Palace. Then on 13th June 1940 it was re-named Palacio del Cinema (Palace of Cinema). It was refurbished on 20th October 1962 with a new seating capacity of 1,539. In the 1970’s it was part of the Balana chain. It was considered one of the greatest of central Barcelona’s historic cinemas, operating as a single screen.
In 2001 it hosted the Barcelona International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, which is held every October.
Unfortunately, it was closed just after that event and proposals were put forward to convert the cinema into a nine-screen multiplex. The plans seem to be have put ‘on-hold’ for the time being.

This is a large movie house whose auditorium decor is covered by drapes. I saw Lee Van Cleef in “The Grand Duel” with my Dad in 1973. I returned here and saw ‘Edward Scissorhands’ in the Spring of 1991. It is located just north of the old Gothic Quarter.
Looking distinctly closed and rundown in feb 2008, and the signs would suggest that its now 9 screens?
