Jardim Cinema

Originally opened in May 1931 as the Esplanada Monumental Cinema, the architect was Raul Martins and it had a seating capacity of 894. It was an open air auditorium (without a roof) that was located on top of a five-storey block in a residential suburb of the city.

The outdoor concept wasn’t very popular and in 1932 it was roofed over, the seating capacity was reduced to 705 and it became known as the Jardim Cinema. There was not much in the way of decoration within the auditorium, but a feature retained from its outdoor state was a fountain that was located in the centre, in front of the screen. There was a delightful Art Deco bas relief panel over the main entrance that depicted naked male and female figures dancing.

I believe the Jardim closed in the 1980’s as by 1990 it was being used as a night club called ‘Loucudas’ with the auditorium painted black and lighting gantry’s hanging from the ceiling.

Any further information on it’s current staus would be appreciated.

In fact, Jardim was used as dancing “Loucuras”, and now is studio and hosting offices. Only the facade is still remembering the old cinema.
