Capitol Theatre

The Capitol Theatre in Whitehall, New York (Birthplace of the U.S. Navy) opened in the late-1910’s. By 1941 it was part of the Schine Circuit. It was closed around 1970 (as far as I can tell!!) For a small town of approx. 4,000, it had an excellent selection of films and great popcorn!! My movie going there was in the late-1950’s to late-1960’s. I always remember them having good prints and a good movie-going atmosphere. The manager was Mr. Loomis and he kept the kids quiet. I owe my appreciation of classic films to the many Saturday and Sunday afternoons at the Capitol Theatre. I understand that a local garage stores cars there now.

I was in Whitehall last weekend to go boating with friends on Lake Champlain. Saw the theatre and stopped to look. The interior is totally gutted, right down to the ground. The side exists were totally open with some boats and old cars stored inside.
