Plaza Drive-In

The Circle Drive-In was opened on July 3, 1957 with Robert Wagner in “Beneath the 12-Mile Reef” & Wendell Corey in “The Great Missouri Raid”. It had a capacity for 1,200-cars.

The name was changed to the Plaza Drive-In in 1967. Car capacity was listed at approximately 700. This drive-in closed around 1980 and was re-opened in 1994. Four years later the Plaza Drive-In closed for good.

I would like to know if there are any future plans of opening this theater back up, if so when if not, what is the possibility of purchasing it?

In the summer of 1996 we showed THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW at midnight at the Plaza. 20th Century Fox didn’t want to give us a good print of the film because it had never shown in a drive-in before, but when we outgrossed every theatre playing it in the US they agreed to strike us a new one. We played it 4 weekends and only took it off because the kids kept setting fire to their matresses to make it smokey and the fire department kept getting calls.

Boxoffice, July 13, 1957: “RICHMOND, VA. – The Circle Drive-In, the ninth airer for this area, has been opened near the Southside Plaza shopping center at McGuire circle. The new drive-in provides parking space for 1,200 cars and is equipped with a screen 75x120 feet. It is being operated by Johnson & Saunders, the same circuit that manages the Glen Drive-In, another local outdoor theatre.”
