Liberty Theatre

The Liberty Theatre was built in 1924 with 705 seats. It was built primarily for African-Americans as a movie and vaudeville theater. Remodeled by the Martin Theatres chain in 1956, to the plans of architect Rufus E. Bland. The Liberty Theater closed in 1974.

In 1984 it was added to the National Register of Historical Places. In November of 1996 it reopened after a one and a half million dollar renovation and is now known as the Liberty Theatre Cultural Center.

The Liberty was one of two theaters lately remodeled by Martin Theatres which were featured in Boxoffice of July 7, 1956. Before and after photos illustrate the article. Both projects were designed by architect Rufus E. Bland.
