Partial shot of the small Majestic Theater, Bridgeton NJ

Located with its entrance on N. Laurel Street and the bulk of the building on Church Lane. The Majestic Theatre was opened on March 3, 1911. It was closed on March 22, 1958 with Fay Spain in “Dragstrip Girl” & Dick Miller in “Rock All Night”. It became a clothing store which was destroyed by fire on June 25, 1968. Since demolished, a vacant lot used for parking and a Domino’s Pizza now stands at this address.

From KenRoe’s comments on the Biograph Theater listing, we can conclude that the Majestic theater was closed by 1950. My 1951 FDY also has no listing in Bridgeton for this theater.

Sack’s Shoes – a fixture in downtown Bridgeton for years- is noticeable in the picture I posted. They are currently located at 34 N Laurel Street – and have been so since at least the mid-1950s – so the Majestic could possibly have been located on Laurel Street. However, it’s definitely possible that Sack’s has moved since this picture was taken. Either way, the Majestic was almost certainly open for business by 1925 or so.

Sack’s Shoes current location seems to be too large to be the same one in the picture. Wonder where this theater was located?

According to a comment on this webpage, the Majestic closed in 1958. Its entry at Cinematour indicats that it was located on N. Laurel Street.

I was born in Bridgeton in 1959 and I believe to expand Sacks took over a site I think was SH Kress on Laurel St. next to Woodruff Drugstore. I don’t remember the site in this photo which for me indicates it was prior to the current location which I am familiar with from the 1960s and 70s.

The April, 1911 issue of Motography noted that the Majestic Theatre had opened recently at Bridgeton, New Jersey.

Herbert Howell launched the Majestic Theatre opened March 3, 1911. It closed for films after a double feature of “Dragstrip Girl” and “Rock All Night” on March 22, 1958. A retail store for Fran’s Clothing was built into the theater in September of 1958 during a major refresh. On June 25, 1968, the building was destroyed by fire.
