Texas TheaterĀ©...Sherman Texas 1944

Built in 1931 by the Robb & Rowley-United Inc. theater chain, the Texas Theater was the number one theater in North Texas (north of Dallas) until it was finally closed in 1973. The original theater featured a ceiling that gave the effect of one being outdoors, with stars shining. That auditorium was destroyed by fire in 1939, but the theater was rebuilt and reopened the same year and remained a top-notch theater until the multi-plexes took over in the 1970’s.

Located in downtown Sherman, it was part of the chain that later became Rowley United Theatres Inc. and eventually was bought out by United Artists. After the theater was closed, it remained a fixture in downtown Sherman into the 1990s, but it was eventually purchased by a local lawyer who tried to find a buyer without success. He had the theater demolished and put in a parking lot. However, the giant “Texas” sign in front of the theater was saved, and the attorney donated it to the Bob Bullock Texas State Museum in Austin, and the sign is now a permanent part of the exhibit at the museum in downtown Austin.

This theatre was probably the work of architect W. Scott Dunne.

The date of the fire was 1/14/39, as reported in the San Antonio Express. Damage was estimated at $50,000. The story noted that the theater was four years old, which would have meant an opening in 1935.

During my recent visit to THS archives in Chicago I found an article confirming W.Scott Dunne as the architect of this theatre.
