Opened as the Melody Cinema on April 30, 1955 with Marika Rokk in “Maske in Blau”. On October 20, 1959 it was renamed Cinema Elysee. A year later on October 14, 1960 it was twinned. Closed in 1987
In 1992 it reopened as the Festival Cinema and was taken over by Cineplex-Odeon and renamed Nouveau Elysee on September 8 1992. It was closed in 1995 and was demolished. It operated as a classy Montreal first-run art house for a number of decades.

I remember this as the place I first saw the Taviani Brothers' 1974 “Allonsanfan” starring Marcello Mastroianni, in 1979. In Italian with French subtitles.

In the summer of 1988, my sister had to see a live production for a CEGEP class. I went and the performance was in cinema one. I recall seeing a long staircase with arrows saying “Cinema 2”, and there was a lot of old clothing on the stairs. The place was not well kept. When it reopened as the Festival in 1992, I am sure the European version of the “Twin Peaks” pilot was shown here. Unfortunately I did not go.
