Northrup Theater

The 800-seat Northrup Theatre is a two and a half story masonry two-part commercial block building. Opening April 8, 1930, playing “Footlight and Fools”, the theatre has been in constant operation since. The Chamber of Commerce purchased the Theatre in 1991 and with substantial community support has completed numerous repairs and upgrades, including a new platter projection system, remodeling restrooms, new seating, heating and air conditioning, digital sound system featuring 3500 watts of digital sound, and replacing the 38'X16' CinemaScope screen.

The interior decor of the Northrup Theatre fosters the true magnificence of the Art Deco era. The articulately painted walls, neon fixtures and color scheme, accentuates the historical significance. In February of 2005, the theatre was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In April 2005, the town will join in celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Northrup Theatre .

If anyone finds themselves traveling through western Kansas in search of something special, the Northrup is it! Congrats on its 75th anniversary. I’ve got some beautiful interior shots of the Northrup I’ll post a.s.a.p. From the sprawling art deco murals to the new screen to fantastic customer service, this is THE theatre to see in western Kansas. Managed superbly by the Norton family, this has got top be the cleanest theatre I’ve ever seen. This one’s a treat, folks. Since this one’s community-owned, I encourage everybody who has a chance to check it out!

Il had the pleasure of seeing this theatre in July,2023. Current seating is 271 but originally was 800. There is a balcony but the local fire marshal won’t allow its usage. The screen is huge and the buildings height will not permit the screen to fly. Beautiful upholstered seats and murals adorn the theatre. It’s mentioned above about the cleanliness of the theatre which I can definitely confirm. The theatre was closed for approximately 5 years between 1985 and 1991. Many thanks to the knowledgeable and friendly theatre manager. The Northrup Theatre is owned by the city of Syracuse.
