The Broadway Theatre was located on Broadway Street at Avenue J. It was operated by Lubbock Threatres, Inc. The Broadway Theatre opened October 5, 1933, and from what I can find it closed its doors in 1955.

In this photo you can see the marquee of the Broadway. This is a digital photo of a very large wall-sized photo of downtown Lubbock found in the Museum of Texas Tech.

The Broadway was converted to two department stores after it closed—Skibell’s of Lubbock and S & Q Clothiers, both upscale stores that were open for many years. They’re gone now, however, but the building remains.

The theater at 1116 Broadway Street was originally to have been called the Ritz, according to an article in the August 13, 1933 issue of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. Remodeling of the existing building, with plans by architect S. B. Haynes (Sylvan Blum Haynes), would get underway within a few days and the project was expected to take about thirty days to completion.
