This and the 14 Flags drive-ins both opened on July 3rd, 1968. Grand opening ad posted in the photo section.

The Winchester is open and recently celebrated it’s 38th anniversary, having opened on July 3rd, 1968 under the guidance of Ferris Shambour. Described as a “showman” by his brother, Ferris was instrumental in bringing Hollywood to the Oklahoma City area and at one time operated over sixty screens. (This was long before the monsterous multi-plex theater chains.) The Winchester was sold in the early 80’s following Ferris' death, but bought again and remains in the Shambour family under the guidance of Ferris' brother, Lindy Shambour. Lindy has worked in the theater business for well over forty years, maybe even closer to fifty as few know his true age.
The Winchester Drive-In is currently open seven days a week. Sunday through Thursday, two movies are shown. On Friday, Saturday, and some holidays, three are shown. All movies are within a few weeks of their original release date and more often than not, there is at least one new movie every Friday. You can listen to the movie through your car radio or a portable radio on FM station 98.3. Admission is five dollars for age eleven and up; two dollars for ages three to ten; and free for those two and under.
The Winchester features a full concession that includes a wide variety of hot foods, candy, ice cream, and drinks. T-shirts are available to purchase in the concession stand as well as a limited number of radio’s for rent.
You will truly not find a better family experience at this reasonable cost anywhere else in Oklahoma City. Take a trip down memory lane, remember an era gone by, and create new memories for your own children and grandchildren…take them to the drive-in!

Anyone know when its opening up for the 2006 season?
We visited the Winchester again last weekend, and the first time was not a fluke! What a blast from the past. Clean facilities, great atmosphere, well mannered crowd…all and all a great visit. I’ve got lots of pictures to post a.s.a.p.
My wife, a few friends and I visited the Winchester last night for the famed weekend triple feature. I can’t really say enough positive things about the Winchester. As one enters the drive in, a giant neon cowboy waves a greeting. The ticket booth is also heavily neoned and manned by several people handing out fliers with radio information as well as the rules of the Winchester. The theater itself is in great condition and is quite well organized. Certain color coded poles designate parking for SUV’s and other large vehicles ensuring a good view for everyone. Although we certainly didn’t see any evidence of bad behavior, security is in place. Much to my wife’s delight, the restrooms were clean and well maintained. My wife is quite picky about food and cleanliness and even she was very impressed the snack bar and the overall appearance of the theater. Our group enjoyed pizza, popcorn, candy and drinks. We don’t usually order so many items but we could afford to have a great time at the Winchester. We especially liked the vintage servateria style snack bar. The food was good and quite affordable. In fact, one can choose from many other items including hamburgers, burritos, corndogs, fries, and chicken strips. The people running the theatre were friendly and very proud of their theatre. This is one of the most family oriented, affordable, fun places to go we’ve found. The Winchester is simply a delight for the whole family!
Our family absolutely loves the Winchester. The folks that run it are very nice and family oriented. We have been several times, and the kids love it. It’s in very good condition I think. The snack bar is even reasonable. We almost don’t make it through the third film (shown only on the weekends) but we have tucked the little ones in and enjoyed more grown up fare late. I can’t believe how little it costs to have a great family night! Everyone should go—the people who run it deserve good business for all their effort to keep up such a treasure.
