The Savoy Theatre was built in 1937 with 845 seats, and remained one of the premier cinemas of Helsinki for half a century. The opening film on 1st September 1937 was Gary Cooper in “Souls at Sea”. In 1964 it was converted into a Cinerama theatre screening “This Is Cinerama”, which was followed by “Windjammer”. “How the West Was Won was the third Cinerama film to be screened in the Savoy Theatre. It closed as a cinema in 1983.
In 1987, the 705-seat (511 on the orchestra level, 194 in the balcony) Savoy Theatre became a concert and live theater venue and is today operated by the Cultural Office.
