Skyview Drive-In

The Skyview Auto Drive-In opened in July 1948. It had a capacity for 350 cars. By 1952 it was operated by L. Stutler & Bert Stearn and Commonwealth Theatres. By 1955 it was operated by L. Stutler & Duard Coe. This twin screen drive-in has a capacity for 400 cars. In the 1960’s it was operated by Cinemette.

In October 2021 the married couple who operated the Skyview Drive-In died within a week of each other due to Covid-19 and the drive-in is closed until further notice.

Following up StrangeStephen’s note, the Observer-Reporter of Greene County PA published an article on Dec 9, 2021 about the Skyview and its late owners. Elizabeth Clara Lysiane Walker, 57, died of Covid on Oct. 11. Her husband, Charles Walker III, 58, died of Covid 10 days later in the same hospital. They had owned the drive-in since 2007.

Caleb Miller, one of the Walkers' sons, told the newspaper, “We’re going to open it up next season if we can. If we can run it, we’re going to.”

I don’t want to be glib in the face of such a tragedy, but how can you tell when a seasonal drive-in is permanently closed? It’s not when it closes, it’s when it doesn’t reopen the following spring. As an optimist, I continue to consider the Skyview open.

Okay, it’s June now, and the Skyview’s web site still shows it “closed for the foreseeable future.” It may reopen later, but I’ll admit that now it’s closed.

When I went home for Thanksgiving, the marquee had a message along the lines of “See You In The Spring”. No pic unfortunately.

New owners are auctioning off the drive-in piece by piece in March 2023. 75 years of history being sold off in three weeks…

I got some cinema letters too. I’d love to buy a speaker off of you if you’re interested in selling one.

A May 2023 Google Street View shows the marquee and ticket booth gone along with a small part of the wall in front of the main screen. Both screens and projection booth/concession stand are still up.

The place seems to be a construction equipment business.
