Designed by frequent Loews architect, David Rockwell, this 15-screen, 3,000-seats, all-stadium seating megaplex opened its doors on May 14, 1999 and quickly became one of the most popular movie venues in Manhattan. Now under the AMC banner, it continues to offer a mix of first-run and independent-type films.
On August 24, 2026 it was announced that the AMC Kipps Bay would close by the end of 2026. It had been purchased by NYU Langone in 2025.

Total capacity 1439, theatre was installed AMC Signature Recliners a few years ago.
Stopped bye last week and asked the manager if they plan to go ahead with the new IMAX installation, in light of the possible sale of the mall land to NYU Hospital. She mentioned they plan to have the new IMAX theater open for showing STAR WARS in Dec. I live in Kips Bay and haven’t seen any activity since the demolition stopped a month ago. I’ll report as I see any.
The IMAX with Laser is now open and playing Doctor Sleep. Aspect ratio looks like it stayed the same, as well as seat count. New seats, entrance and obviously IMAX system though.
New imax capacity 308 seats, down from 666 when the theatre first open.
I want to like this theatre- its clean, comfy, and in a great location. But nearly every auditoirum has dim, purplish projectioN and/or improper framing despite no windowboxing. Its a sin. I have sent complaints to AMC.

I am seeing rumors this place is going to close by the end of the year. I wouldn’t take them as gospel but it’s a possibility. It was an awesome single screen theater under Walter Reade.
