The actual opening date is September 9, 1950 with a one-day showing of Randolph Scott in “Colt 45” with no extra short subjects.

Today, the outline, ramps, and part of the entrance ramp are the only remains of the drive-in.

And, although it is difficult to confirm with the Google Street photos, a light pole that sits just to the west of the power lines may also have been a part of the drive-in.

Here is a current pic of the Colony Theatre in Gallipolis. This phone is disconnected but maybe contacting the Colony could help.

Shockley,
I too, am frustrated about the disconnected phone number. I have tried calling there several times this year. I have some friends in Point Pleasant, so I will talk one of them into driving by to see what the sign says, just for verification.

It is definitely open. They were playing the Indiana Jones new movie just recently. I intend to go several times this summer in case it’s the last.

Kanauga Drive-in reopens Friday

KANAUGA – Despite getting a late start this summer, the Kanauga Drive-in is set to open for business this coming Friday. The drive-in, located at 1483 Ohio 7 North, will be open weekends, Friday through Monday. Featured movies currently include “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” and “Iron Man.” Admission is $6 for adults, $2 for children six to 11, and free for children under 6. Full concessions will be available and this year’s snack bar may feature some unusual items.

According to Tom Wheeler, owner and operator of the Kanauga Drive-in, he had not planned to reopen this year, but at the request of the public he will now open up the drive-in for a short season lasting through September.

Wheeler’s father, Harry, built the Kanauga Drive-in in 1950 and for many local residents it has become a staple in Gallia County and the area. This year’s success is likely to influence whether or not it will be reopened next summer.

A car show hosted last spring by Ryan and Marcie Cochran of Texas will return again this year on June 28. The show will also feature a movie and live music.

I hear the place is for sale. I sure hope they do not sell it. Just about everyone I know is crushed because this place is the last in the area. I’ve always liked going there.

I am related to the Wheeler family and have some wonderful memories of going to the drive in on weekends during the summer. I do not live in the area now but have kept up on some of the happenings there. Recently the drive in has been host to a variety of events such as concerts, National car shows and Flea Markets. I also got my first job there as a teenager as lot man /janitor. To my recollection the concession stand was kept very clean as were the restroom facilities, Uncle Harry was a stickler for cleanliness and I have no doubt those high standards are being maintained today by Cousin Tom and family members, The food was of excellant Quality and the Bar b- Q sandwiches were to die for.I also remember the fireworks displays that they used to put on yearly on the 4rth of July. Thanks to Lost Memory for the pic my children have always heard me speak of the drive in but had never seen a pic of it.
