“Pictured is a photograph of the front of the Strand Theatre in Marietta when the film “Raintree County” played in 1959. This 1957 color film, adapted from the novel of the same name by Ross Lockridge Jr., was set during the Civil War. It was directed by Edward Dmytryk and starred Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, Eva Marie Saint and Lee Marvin. The film, originally shown at the Strand in 1957-58, was brought back by demand for a one-day only showing. Nancy Zimmerman’s father, James Zimmerman, was manager of the Strand Theatre from 1953 to 1960. According to Nancy, her father kept a box with a pencil and notepad at the door where patrons exited the theatre so they could write a request for any movie they wanted to see again. Raintree County was one of the films that had the most requests for a return engagement. In the left hand corner of the photo is Nancy’s mother, Bonnie Zimmerman, standing in period costume promoting the film.”
