“This is Fiesta 1926, the second parade to pass in front of the new Granada Theatre!
The oxen and carreta were from Dwight Murphy’s ranch. This dynamic duo was a kind of U-Haul in its day. A typical use would be to haul linens and clothes to the hot springs in Montecito where the locals would build ramadas and the womenfolk would do laundry for a few days — all the while singing and talking and holding a kind of wash-day fiesta.
Here Chata Luis is strumming the guitar and singing one of the old songs (like you learned in Mrs. O’Sullivan’s Children’s Strolling Chorus. In the front of the carreta is Bryan Abrams and it looks like the back of Teresa di Piazzi Janssens head."
