Additional description credit George H Petrin: Picture taken prior to the fire of 1916. Notice how narrow South Main Street gets after Anawan Street. After the fire, the city took some of the frontage of the buildings on the right to widen South Main Street. The city then wanted the Bay State Street Railway to relocate their tracks to the new center of South Main, but the company balked because of cost and they never did so the tracks remained with a wider west side than the east side as you see in this picture.
