There was/is a small school that was just behind this theatre. When I was REALLY young in the mid 80s, I went to that school (it was more of less like a daycare). I remember seeing that theatre and they always had cars parked behind it with white Xs on them. From the playground I could see these cars being towed to the parking lot behind the theatre. I must have been around 4 or 5 years old at the time. I remeber when the old folks home was built too, sometime in the 90s. I went to Walnut Elementry school, which is just about a block away, and sometimes the kids went over there.
I remember the whittier quake… i was really young! The old quad was a wreck!! There were big cracks in the buildings… I dont remember the whittier theater though. Sadly I do remember going into the Whittwood mall back in its Hay day.. and it was really empty the last time I was there. I remember going to the Regal behind there a whole lot! There was also a Hudsons Grill (burger place) back there too.. dont know if it is still around. I live in Kansas now. Its too bad people like tearing town the old stuff… I am glad they saved the Fox in Fullerton. If they got rid of that to make apts, then it would of been a great loss.
I went to HS near this DI and it was already closed, but was being used as a swap meet at the time… I think they were even trying to save the place from being torn down.. but I guess it didn’t happen.
I was very young when I went to this drive in with my parents in the 80s. I saw one of the Superman movies and Honey I shrunk the kids! there… and I am sure a few others that I cant remember. I lived down the street and still remember seeing that theater… there was another movie theather in the Fashion Square which used to be across the street, where the Regal now stands. I can also remember seeing nobody in line to get into the drive in, and the people looking really bored at the drive up ticket windows.. then one day.. it just closed. It was there for awhile before they tore it down to make the K mart. For the longest time, the weeds would grow pretty big around the old playground stuff.. I should of taken some pictures of it.
very cool photos!! It looked about the same when I was a kid in the 80s.. just not as new looking.
