I saw my first movie here in 1985 – “Santa Claus: The Movie,” starring Dudley Moore and John Lithgow. At the time, they lobby still had the giant paintings of old movie stars – John Wayne, etc. I would love to see photos of that.
Years later, I worked at this theater as an usher/concession/ticket seller. It was a great experience. I once got into a conversation with the projectionist, and asked him what his favorite movie they ever screened there was. He said “MASH.”
In the 1990s, they used to do children’s birthday parties at this theater. If you had your party here, you received a year’s free pass to the theater for your entire family. Sweet deal. They also put your name on the marquee AND gave you a video.
I had my 10th birthday here in 1991. They showed “Edward Scissorhands.” I also had my 12th birthday here in 1993 – they showed “The Mighty Ducks.” Great place. Definitely miss it.
Of all of the movie theaters on Long Island, this is the one I miss the most. In 1999, my senior year of high school, I was a part of a large group of die-hard “Wars-ies” who camped out for “The Phantom Menace” tickets. I waited in line for 17 hours. The experience was MUCH better than the movie.
The balcony was an added bonus. I saw a bunch of movies here through the years – “Back to the Future Part III,” “Batman Returns,” “Batman Forever,” the Star Wars Special Editions, “Air Force One,” “Contact” —– many others. The last movie I was able to see before this place closed for good was “Mission Impossible 2.”
The first movie I saw at this theater was “Ghostbusters 2” in 1989. It was when they housed a video store. The video store was selling giant “Ghostbusters” cookies. That was a treat.
Through the years, I saw a few others here – “Sgt. Bilko,” “The Frighteners,” “Independence Day,” “Lethal Weapon 4,” “Home Alone 2,” “The X-Files Fight the Future,” – and then some indie flicks, like “Pieces of April.”
A cool little theater. It’s a shame it’s not there anymore.
TEENAGE MOTHER WAS FILMED ON LONG ISLAND?! That’s nuts. I have it on DVD. Will have to check that out.
