Regarding the previous posts about “Airport” at RCMH, does anyone know what other theaters in the U.S. showed 70mm prints of this film. I’ve always heard there were very few. If you answer, please give your source.
The Gaylynn was a great house, but what Cinerama films played there? Where do you get your info about screen sizes and dates? I don’t doubt it, just interested.
This was a popular theater on “The Drag” when I was at UT in the ‘70s. I seem to recall its being mainly a revival house. I do not remember its having a second balcony screen during the '70s.
This theater is below a towering dorm, where I lived from 1974-1976. Even then it showed mostly art, independent, soft-core, and foreign films. “King of Hearts,” “Going Places,” “Pink Flamingos,” and “The Cheerleaders” are among the many films I saw there. With hundreds of college students an elevator trip away, it’s no surprise this has stayed a busy place!
Too bad—this was a great theater that I remember from my college and law school years, 1974-1981. In particular, I recall major re-issues of “The Sound of Music” and “Fiddler on the Roof” and the exclusive first-run of “The Deer Hunter.”
This was Houston’s only Cinerama theater. “How the West Was Won” played there in 1963, but as a 7 year old I couldn’t really appreciate the Cinerama process. After the demise of Cinerama, the theater continued to be a popular venue. The last film I recall seeing there was “That’s Entertainment.”
My first memory of the Tower was seeing “Airport” twice in about April 1970, during its exclusive first run in Houston. The lines were very long, and the tension in the theater during the film was amazing. Few theaters got 70mm Todd-AO prints; most got 35mm anamorphic versions. Does anyone know which version of “Airport” the Tower ran?

Of course, I meant exclusive in Houston!

Some big first-runs, including “Summer of ‘42” played here, but for about the last 10 or 15 years of its life this was an adult movie house.
The Delman was a very popular venue for Disney releases and re-releases during the ‘60s.
Films that had exclusive first-runs at the Alabama included “The Sound of Music,” “The Poseidon Adventure,” “The Towering Inferno,” and “Grease.”
