Typical Cinemark design & layout. Cool midnight showings of classic films in the summer. Cliffhanger was my first movie here. Also saw Beverly Hills Cop 3 here as well. Broke up with an old girlfriend here after seeing The Mask of Zorro. Weird memory.
I grew up right down the road. I remember when it was being built, and applying for a job (I didn’t get). Agreed, very ho-hum. Large lobby in the middle with theatres spidering out from there. I saw virtually all of my movies here or at the Regal from 1993-2005, when I got married, and moved to Mantua.
I remember when this was built, and being impressed from the outside at the construction. It was very well done, for a multiplex. I last drove past it in 2009, and, it still looks like it could be opened tomorrow. I have no idea what went wrong here, either.
Well, Mike, I was a kid back then. I would never do it now, obviously. But, management and workers were pretty lax, plus, we had friends that worked there. We’d save the large popcorn and drink cups for “free” refills, so, we never paid for those either. When we got into our teens, and getting caught could mean the back of a cop car, we put an end to it.
Last movie I saw there was ‘54’ in 1998. Dollar cinema at the time. I remember it having a small, wood-paneled lobby, a couple of video games, and small red vinyl benches to sit on. The theaters were usual 70s style, with uncomfortable vinyl seats with metal backs, but, the experience was fine. I never remember an issue with sound or picture. Also saw Flirting with Disaster here as a dollar theater.
This was also where I saw ET on it’s premiere weekend. The lines were long, and we sat in the 4th row. I remember my godmother crying at the end, at it was the first time I really understood the power of the motion picture.
Great pic NYozoner. Thanks! It’s amazing how different things looked before the 141 expansion.
I wonder how many drive-ins bit the dust for WalMarts in the 80s.
It’s so great to finally see a post on this theater. I thought it was forgotten. I didn’t know of it’s existance until I moved to DE in 2005. What a creepy site, especially when you walk up and peer through the broken windows. It looks like a luxury liner shipwreck. The chandelier still hung, in tatters, a year ago. You can also see where the consession stands once stood. I was not going to even chance walking in, for feer of death, but, I will try to post some pics or video soon.
Love the March 1953 photo listed above. Notice, right next door is a Horn & Hardart- another former Philadelphia tradition. Here are some shots of the Earle during demolition (thanks TUL). Sad:
With the proximity of this theater to Rowan University, I am shocked that someone has not stepped up and make this work as a movie house. New/old/live/whatever. I saw a boxing match there a decade ago, and it looked OK then.
Can anyone give me info on the Cinemart on Gov Prinz? I can’t find any info anywhere, but, I stop to look at it every time I’m in the area. What a mystery. The only thing I can tell is that I was built in the 60’s due to the chandelier and font on the front sign.

In the 1954 photo, what is next door? It looks like a race track of some kind. Thanks.

Thanks Barry! Great write up! I may drive over there one day and take a video for all the web to see.
Does anyone have pics of the FunScape?

A hot summer night in 1964 under the marquee.
