looking at the pics posted of the original theater, I noticed how that strip of Melrose looks very similar to the strip of buildings between Van Ness & Wilton Place.
5308 Melrose is definitely now the one big building that stretches from one end of the block to the other.
A bit off topic I guess, but there was also an old ice skating rink right around there.
The picture from google up above shows the opposite side of the street, but if you rotate around you can see where it once was.
While it’s always heartbreaking when a movie theater is demolished, this particular one at least remains in the movie biz.
This is the site of Raleigh Studios. It’s had different names over the years, but Raleigh is the current name of the studio. Obviously the building there now is one of the newer ones on this studio lot, but you can see some of the older buildings of the studio behind it.
And, they use their studio for movie screenings. So while the theater itself is gone, you can still go see movies along this block of Melrose Ave.
I had no idea there was ever a theater so close to me. I’m usually looking at the listings in my home state. I actually bought my mattress from one of the stores on that strip.
it actually closed later than that. i saw Jurassic Park 2 there, my husband saw Jerry Maguire. So it was still open as of 96/97.
At some point it became a second run theater, or the ‘dollar fifty’ theater as my family called it. it closed after a fire.
Where exactly at that intersection was it? Darley Inn and the Claymont Stone School are both historic buildings so it wouldn’t have been on those corners. And I think Archmere’s been around awhile. Was it where the Food Lion is now? Although that’s the Darley Road side of Phila Pike, not the Myrtle.
I can’t imagine it lost business as early as 1950. It was right near Brookview Apartments, which was a huge complex in walking distance of the theater.
a belated congrats to the Everett Theatre for getting back up on its feet. It’s a wonderful theater, and I’ve had the chance to perform there during the Peach Festival.
I went at least once in the later part of the 80s. Almost went to see the Star Trek movie that opened in 1997.
I can’t recall if it closed and reopened in the meantime. At some point it opened up as a comedy theater. I haven’t been to that mall much since Value City turned into Burlington Coat Factory.
Last I saw the old theater and sign on the front still remain.
they are doing stuff to the shopping center across the street. first they tore down the old Strawbridges building, and since then it looks like they’ve been doing more. I used to go to Tuesday Morning until they left the shopping center.
I always wonder what it’s like inside, after sitting empty for all those years.
I saw a version of The Nutcracker there in the 90s. They were having some issues and it wouldn’t play so we got a refund on our snacks and tickets and got to come back to see it another time.
I don’t recall what, if anything, was there between the movie theater and the karate studio. I know there had been a nice independent record store on that strip that finally closed down in the late 90s/early 200s. Nearby now is a movie rental place.

if only this was located in LA…

Maybe the person knows the property owner.
It is a risky spot to go trespassing in with a police station right across the road.

If I’m not mistaken, they do sometimes show older classic movies here occasionally….it might have been Gone with the Wind or something.
There’s another theater attached to it, the Baby Grand. Not sure it’s history or if it ever showed films.
