Huge news! We’ve acquired the Seattle Cinerama Theater from the estate of Paul G. Allen and will be reopening later this year.
This acquisition adds to our current venue offerings: SIFF Film Center, SIFF Cinema Uptown, and SIFF Cinema Egyptian. We look forward to stewarding this historic venue for magical moviegoing experiences well into the future—with all of you.
In the meantime, please enjoy the 49th Seattle International Film Festival in venues across Seattle now through May 21, followed by a week of select films streaming on the SIFF Channel May 22–28."
“After long consideration and much effort, we regret that we are unable to continue operating the Ken Cinema.”

kagemusha98, Do you have some of those flyers? I’d love to get a look at them.
There was a similar issue when THE DEVILS played at the Cinema Grossmont. I had to look up the Daily Aztec to confirm that it was indeed THE DEVILS and not something else.

Landmark’s La Jolla Village Theater will show its last films Sunday, as it set to be torn down to make way for a Nordstrom Rack.
The four-screen theater, which shows mostly independent and fine-arts films, opened in 1979.
The shopping center, called the Shops at La Jolla Village, at 8801 Villa La Jolla Drive, is undergoing a major revitalization that will include a 32,000 square-foot and two 6,000-square-foot commercial buildings. It’s the first major change for the mall since 1990.
Also leaving are a TGI Friday’s and B.J’s Pizza. Elijah’s Deli moved to Kearny Mesa earlier this year. The Whole Foods, CVS, and Aaron Brothers are expected to remain on the other end of the strip mall.
“Pacific Beach Movie House To Close February 21, 1986|HILLIARD HARPER | San Diego County Arts Writer
SAN DIEGO — The Fine Arts Theatre in Pacific Beach, one of San Diego’s few big movie houses, will close March 9.
Landmark Theaters of Los Angeles operates the 500-seat Fine Arts, which specializes in foreign films. In the Pacific Plaza shopping center, the 22-year-old theater has fallen victim to the center’s redevelopment plans, which call for more small retail stores. The wing housing the theater building will be demolished and is not likely to be replaced, said Bill Tribolet, vice president of Collins Development Corp.
“There’s a greater need for smaller retail stores in the beach area … and theaters typically aren’t open during the day,” Tribolet said. The parking spaces required by movie theaters for lengthy periods also conflict with the short-term parking needs of most retail establishments, Tribolet said.
Bill Richardson, Landmark’s San Diego area manager, called the closing “a shame,” adding that the theater will shut down when the current run of Akira Kurosawa’s Oscar-nominated movie “Ran” ends March 9.
Landmark, which also operates the Ken Cinema in Kensington, the Guild Theatre in Hillcrest and the Cove Theatre in La Jolla, took over the Fine Arts in 1979. The company is looking at other vacant theaters in San Diego, including the downtown Broadway Playhouse.
The immediate effect of the Fine Arts' closing will be a change in programming at the Ken, Richardson said. The Ken normally shows double features that change daily. “You will probably see more one- or two-week runs of foreign films or fine art films. There’s a lot of good product available.”
Richardson said the chain will try to absorb the Fine Arts' staff at its other theaters. “I feel particularly sorry for our janitor, who’s been there 15 or 20 years,” he said.
Richardson called the Fine Arts' sound system with its Dolby “surround” configuration one of the best in the city. The sound system and the Fine Arts' projection equipment will be used at the chain’s other San Diego theaters.
The Fine Arts opened in 1964, showing art films. In the mid-1970s, the fare shifted to pornography, until the Landmark takeover.
The Fine Arts is the only movie house in Pacific Beach. Based on current retail trends, Tribolet indicated that it may be the beach community’s last.

CINERAMA PART III (1984 to 1988): SATURATION AND GÖTTERDÄMERUNG
As the release patterns of movies changed, the Cinerama lost its distinguished role as being one of the few theaters that offered exclusive engagements in San Diego. Films would no longer open at one theater for their premiere run. Instead, they would open at several theaters on their opening day. Despite this, the Cinerama would continue to host significant runs for such films as Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Amadeus, and Top Gun.
In 1988, against the wishes of its parent, the Cinerama was closed and demolished by the land owner, the Douglas Allred Company.
RE = Re-Issue/ Return Engagement
MO = Move-over (i.e. continuation of engagement from another theater)
Listings include regular engagements only. Dates represent the first day of commercial release and, where known, the presentation format has been provided. Test screenings, sneak-preview screenings, midnight screenings, premieres and other private events are not included. Unless noted, presentations are all 35mm – mono sound presentation.

SIFF logo and the Seattle Cinerama Theater
OC Register is reporting that Regal has closed this theater, effective immediately.

And apparently it will get a new lease on life… with only 8 screens but a rooftop bar.

La Jolla Village Theater to close Sunday
By Jonathan Horn 2:25 p.m.June 8, 2015

“Pacific Beach Movie House To Close
February 21, 1986|HILLIARD HARPER | San Diego County Arts Writer

RE = Re-Issue/ Return Engagement MO = Move-over (i.e. continuation of engagement from another theater)
Listings include regular engagements only. Dates represent the first day of commercial release and, where known, the presentation format has been provided. Test screenings, sneak-preview screenings, midnight screenings, premieres and other private events are not included. Unless noted, presentations are all 35mm – mono sound presentation. All listing from San Diego Union, San Diego Tribune and “70mm in San Diego” by Michael Coate and William Kallay.
