Construction is in the final stages with completion projected for the end of 2024 and the grand opening early in 2025. The budget has grown to nearly $90 million. The exterior has a recently added vertical sign (posted in the photo section) and the historic facade with a reproduction marquee is being reinstalled just inside the new glass box lobby.
Updates from the official website of Foundation for the Carolinas have great pictures of the most recent work done which is estimated at 70% complete. EverGreene Studios is doing incredible work on plaster restoration and painting. No opening date has been set but the budget has climbed to $88 million.
New owners have purchased this theatre and it reopens with movies on Friday, November 17, 2023. It will operate as a non-profit managed and owned by the Hawthorne Theatre & Arts Collaborative. Movies and other arts events are in the programming mix.
Top notch art house theatre. Staff introductions before each show and consistent attention to detail in quality of presentation, cleanliness and diverse programming make this one of the best theaters I’ve been too. The membership based non profit running this organization is planning a 3 screen expansion in an older building about a block away on Grand Ave. Fundraising is almost complete for that and construction should begin soon.
The Charlotte Business Journal just reported on updates for this project. Opening is at least a year away so hopefully some time in summer of 2024. The costs is now estimated at $73 million and may go up a bit more. Fundraising is needed for an additional $12 million. The 32 story hotel addition over the lobby has not restarted yet but hopefully will soon. Inside work on the ceiling is progressing as is recasting of ornamental plaster removed in the 1961 Cinerama remodeling. No photographers have been allowed in yet in hopes of building up a wow factor closer to the reopening.
Still open as of May 2023. A plaque on the building states this was the site for a roller rink and silent picture house in the 20’s and became the Coaster Theater for movies in the late 60’s.
Work is still not complete but is slated to finish in late 2023. Like so many other construction projects during the pandemic, material shortages and other problems have caused many setbacks.
The latest update for the opening date is now early 2024. Hopefully some interior pictures will be released soon to give everyone a preview. It’s been an incredibly long construction project hampered by every delay imaginable but it looks like this project will give Charlotte an asset unlike anything else in this fast growing city.
Restored and reopened as a live music and event venue. A marquee similar to the original has been put back over the entrance. A picture is added of the restored exterior.
The brewery operating in this space has tweaked their name to Mars Theatre Brewing Company. It better identities the history of the building and differentiates it from its sister brewery located in Chimney Rock.
Top notch cinema with great programming, excellent projection equipment, comfortable seating, great acoustics, a very attentive staff and a very nice concession area.
Work continues on renovations but several setbacks have pushed the completion and reopening date to spring 2023. Work on the hotel tower over the new lobby area may resume soon in the fall of 2022.
Recently attended a screening at the Rose and I think it’s one of the best run cinemas I’ve experienced. It’s a 3 screener now and I was in the original auditorium. It has a steep rake to the floor so sight lines are good. All the equipment is first rate and acoustics were excellent. A brief introduction from the staff with information about the film made it seem like a special event. Some original stenciling on a side wall was viewable before the introduction but the drapes were pulled over it for better acoustics. It’s all part of the small efforts that together the Rose a very special place to see a movie.

Still going strong with art house movie programming and other occasional community events. The Alamo is an awesome asset for this small costal town.
