This was originally operated by a chain called Super Saver Cinemas that had 3 other 8 plexes in the Valley. This theater probably opened with the mall in 1990 or so.

One thing I remember about the lobby of this theater is the walls and celling were decorated with a photo collage made up of bits of posters of the various films that played in this multi plex. Unfortunately, when this theater was remodeled in 1989, the collage was replaced with United Artists rather bland interior. I believe this theater opened as a 4 plex and was expanded to 8 in 1989.

The Pavilions opened in late 1989 and had 70mm capabilities (although they never showed anything in 70mm). The three largest auditoriums had THX and the largest was fitted with a Cinema Digital Sound processor for “Terminator 2”. It was the only theater in Arizona to have the short lived CDS format.

Actually, this theater was made into a 6 plex sometime in the 1980’s and was a second run theater. It closed sometime in the mid 1990’s when the mall was closed.

This complex, including the original 1968 large auditorium, is scheduled to be demolished later in 2006/early 2007. It is going to be “replaced” by a 16-plex being built on the site of the old UA Chirstown 6 plex that was inside the mall. According to a diagram of the new mall layout, the theater site will be replaced with more parking.

This theatre was run by GCC and was bought by Harkins Theatres in 1993. It has since been remodeled and expanded to an eleven plex. Of the three multiplexes around Metrocenter, this is the only plex still open.

Agreed. Although Harkins says it has a 70 ft screen – 10 feet larger – because of the stadium seating, it makes the screen seem a lot smaller than what the real Cine Capri had. Just goes to show that they don’t know how to build them anymore.

Actually found out this multiplex was originally just a large single screen theater that was opened in 1967. Smaller screens were added in the 1970s and again in the 1990s but the main auditorium had 70mm capability and was the first THX theater in Phoenix. On the inside, it reminds me a lot of the Main Chinese in LA – large 1000 seat auditorium, small 60 ft screen by comparison.

The Bethany Theater was located on the north side of Bethany Home Road and 23rd Ave and was operated by Nace Theaters. It opened in April 1962 and I believe closed in 1982. The theater ultimately closed because it was about a mile from a mall 6 plex and a 5 plex that were able to get more popular films to play at them.
