Back in the 80’s when my 2nd home was The Capri Theatre, The Palace was down the street. However, I remember it being a porn theatre. In fact, the projectionist lived in my building in Sunset Heights at the time.

That’s way before my time. I was going to The Capri towards the end of its life. late 70’s – Early 80’s. I remember seeing a lot of horror and grindhouse films there. Lots of double features. I always used to sit in the balcony. Loved it up there. I wish they’d never knocked it down…

The Fiesta was (and is, presumably) quite unique. Growing up in El Paso, we kind of took it for granted, esp. ‘cos it’s way out of town. Almost outside the city. I went there once in high school with a bunch of people. We were just trying to explore the place. It turns out it’s not only a drive-in, but a porn shop as well! Bizarre. As for how and what kind of projection they run there, I’m sure it’s not digital I can tell you that much. That said, it’s one of the few (if not the only) drive-ins left in El Paso. If you’re ever there, check it out – just for historical purposes, of course.
The Pershing Theatre is in an area of El Paso called 5 Points where Avenues and Streets intersect. I was a regular at this movie house as well. However, I didn’t start going ‘til I was in my early teens. Way after they shut and torn down The Capri. We would train-hop from downtown El Paso all the way to The Pershing in 5 Points. The last movie I remember seeing there was Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon. Shortly after that they shut it down, but it stayed intact. Last I heard was a couple from New York bought it and restored it and also live in it. Very cool. I wish I could do that to The Capri.
Thanks for the pic, Ken! Brings back many memories. I grew up in El Paso and saw MANY movies at The Capri. The sad thing is there’s not many pics of this movie house around. I’ve searched everywhere and yours is the first decent one I come across. I only wish there were pics of the interior which I remember being quite nice. What I remember happening was that it was shut down due to the construction of The Plaza hotel which still stands in downtown El Paso. It’s a shame because the Capri was a treasure.
