This closed theater was recently repainted and looks better than it has in years. It’s a great name for this L.A. neighborhood. There is another theater about 2 blocks away that is now a used furniture store.

They were out in front with art films and independent cinema in the early 1980s. What a great, great, movie house it was back then. If you wanted to see Picnic at Hanging Rock – you had to go to Vinegar Hill. I remember having my mind blown by Ridley Scott’s “The Duellists” here.

I went to many B-movies at the Dallas Theater in Dallastown in the mid 1960s. But it was the Strand or the Capitol in downtown York for James Bond (Thunderball, You Only Live Twice) , Jerry Lewis, Pink Panther or other first-run movies. I saw Easy Rider at the Strand or Capitol. I could never remember the differences, but they felt pretty up-town compared to Dallastown.

The Sound of Music? Strand or Capitol. That’s for sure. Great theaters.

I went to the Dallas many times in the mid 1960s and saw great B grade monster and sci fi movies like First Men in the Moon, Robinson Crusoe on Mars, Crack in the World and a lot of Vincent Price, Mummy and Creature movies. For the better movies, like James Bond or Jerry Lewis films, we went into York to the Capitol or Strand. The Dallas was great, though – very kid oriented. Every Christmas they gave out a small box of chocolates and an orange. It was a happening place on Friday nights for a 10 year old. As far as I can recall, it stayed open well into the 70s. I learned to love movies here.
