moviebuff82: You asked if NTTD is being shown in 70mm.
Since you saw it.. is it???
The AMC LC site mentions only 40 minutes of it were
shot with IMAX cameras. Who knows now-a-days!!
Was the image wide-screen letter-boxed on this giant screen?

Well, imagine masking with the huge screen in the IMAX theater here at Lincoln Square when non-IMAX films are shown! Wouldn’t that be a project!!

I remember an art theater at 34th St. and Second Ave where narrow black strips would come down from the top of the screen at the beginning of the movie to mark where the sides of the movie would be. Not sure how they handled the height.

(Side note: I’ve always wondered why TV went with the “wider-screen” format but many programs/commercials chose 16:9. Wonder if they ever considered the standard to be 16:9? When I saw my first new TV screen in the “wide screen” format I stated it’s not the wide screen I’m used to!! Interesting they were showing a 16:9 movie that didn’t use the full screen!)

Stopped bye last week and asked the manager if they plan to go ahead with the new IMAX installation, in light of the possible sale of the mall land to NYU Hospital. She mentioned they plan to have the new IMAX theater open for showing STAR WARS in Dec. I live in Kips Bay and haven’t seen any activity since the demolition stopped a month ago. I’ll report as I see any.

jojoa… OK.. around twice as wide as high!! Where is it being shown in your 1.90:1 ratio??

Well.. Well. Saw LK in 3D yesterday at 09:30 AM in Theater 7 at Kips Bay. (I took a look into the IMAX theater to see how the refurbish is coming along. The only IMAX item left is the screen!! Sadly fear that IMAX will not be coming back, as I’ve mentioned earlier.. the whole mall block is being demolished to make way for a new, larger NYU medical building. Excuse this off topic note!! I’m putting a couple shots of the IMAX theater as it stands now.) Also sad to report LION KING in the Kips Bay theater 7 is not in the wide screen seen in the ads!! More like the TV ratio. What a disappointment. Sorry I couldn’t see it here at Lincoln. I did enjoy the “movie”. It is a remarkable technical accomplishment!! Note: The previews were so loud they shook my seat and made me nauseous. I reported to the manager and he did give me a pass!! Thanks Anthony!!

digital3d… Thanks for the heads-up!! I’m going to see LK in 3D here next week. $25.69 senior ticket 3:00PM (No early morning 3d>) Thought… What ratio is the rest of the movie in? I would hope 2:1?? If these sequences are expanded vertically, like they say, aren’t we losing width?

I’ve heard through a Kips Bay neighborhood group there are discussions of selling the entire mall where the theater is located, which also includes Fairway Market, Rite Aid and others. NYU Medical Center wants to buy the area then demolish the entire mall and put up a taller 61 story medical building in its place. Hard to fathom!!

Saw Aladdin here on May 30 in Theater #7. Screen brightness was very low. All the beautiful colors were subdued and could not make out images in the dark scenes as in the cave where the lamp is kept. Is it a matter of laser strength? Very disappointing.

Re: Dolby ATMOS coming to Kips Bay? I did plan to see DUMBO here at Lincoln last week, but their senior morning price for the standard version in 2D was $17.29. Saw it at Kips Bay in Theater 8 last week, senior morning for $8.49 with an extra perk!! Noticed the sound was particularly good. Looked up and saw the 10 ceiling speakers, and my seat rumbled several times. Seems they’re making Theater 8 into Dolby. IMAX is 2 theaters down. Enjoyed the movie. Yep.. they do go to DREAMLAND Coney Island??!!

Curious. From the IMAX site it states “When you watch Damien Chazelle’s First Man in IMAX, you will experience one of mankind’s greatest accomplishments in the most immersive way possible.

The Academy Award-winning filmmaker captured the breathtaking lunar sequences of the legendary Apollo 11 mission with IMAX’s high-resolution cameras.

Really? What about the rest of the film?? What will we see on the screen at Lincoln Square in the IMAX laser presentation?

Continuing my “2001” adventure. On Aug 26 I gave my review of viewing the 70mm film version at AMC Lincoln Center at that theater’s comments. The focus/detail was incredible but the sound was ONLY from the screen. This morning I tried my best to enjoy the “restored” digital version at Kips Bay. I didn’t!! First, the surround sound was 100% better than the sound at Lincoln Square, in that it was surround!@! It did lift me out of my seat and sonically and placed me in the images. Bless von Karajan!! et.al. BUT, there was at time, and usually during the BEAUTIFUL dead space silence, very loud rumbling and bass sound bursts from a nearby theater. Terrible!!

The presentation I saw, as the theater manager informed me.. in digital format.. was a great disappointment as far as screen clarity. I would say there was a 10-15% loss in clarity over the film I watched at AMC Lincoln Center. I’m so glad I heard of those few presentations!! It was bad enough to make most of the effects look like effects.

I stuck it out until INTERMISSION appeared on the screen and for the lights to come up. They didn’t, so I slowly made my way to the side aisle and down to the exit. Since the lights were still not on I spoke to the 30 or so patrons in the dark saying I had seen the film on Sat and the lights should come on, mentioning I would tell the manager on the way out. A lady exiting with me thanked me for the announcement!!

I asked for the manager and met him in the lobby at the ticket counter. Told him of the theater sitting in the dark and he mentioned, to my wonderment.. that persons had come down to the lobby on prior showings saying they thought there was a problem with the projectionist.. (not aware there isn’t one!) He went up to turn the lights on, but did mention he had thought that the darkness was there to keep the audience in outer space mode????!!:):) Yep.. I’m a perfectionist when it comes to visual displays??!! But I want to help everyone get what they pay for!! I’m concerned this digital version is NOT as awe-inspiring as the original!!

WE CAN/SHOULD DO BETTER THAN THIS??!!

Still .. no lights. So. I announced to the dark auditorium (about 30 persons) that I had seen the film on Sat and there might be a 15-20 minute intermission and that I would tell the manager on my way out. I asked for the manager and met him at the front desk. Told him of the theater sitting in the dark and he mentioned that “Oh, that happened on the weekend and people had come down to report it thinking the projection had a problem!!” I asked him if he could turn the lights on.. and he went up to see if they were still in the dark. He did mention he thought that it might be a built-in effect to keep in audience in outer space??? Left the theater very disappointed. Very glad I saw the film presentation at Lincoln Center.

Yep… I’m very particular!!! But I want to help everyone get what they pay for!! I’m concerned this digital version is NOT as awe-inspiring as the original. We can do better than this!!!!!!!

WOW!! EXPERIENCED “2001” at the AMC IMAX theater (68th S. and Broadway) here in New York City at 9:30 AM yesterday (Aug 25, 2018). Ticket was $19.29 including Fandango service charge.
What a THRILL!! The theater was about 1/3 capacity. The 70mm print was from the original negatives with no restoring. It didn’t need it. (Although I did miss the surround sound. All the great original multi-track sound was only from the screen. Perhaps the projectionist didn’t press the “surround” button. I was all set to be raised even higher out of my recliner seat with Zarathustra .et.al.!!) They even played the “prologue” voice music, and kept the INTERMISSION. (Noticed the screen was not white but a dark grey?? Sure a new acoustic fabric!!) I first saw “2001”, now that I think of it, also on Broadway down in the Times Square area in the Warner (Cinerama) Theater in 1968. After 50 years I’m still awed with each frame, and still processing the message/s!! I mentioned to a fellow viewer at intermission they might well rename it to “3001” as we have a long way to go from where we were while experiencing the masterpiece.

I’ve read they’re releasing a restored version in 350 IMAX theaters later on.

The legend lives on!!

AlAlvarez.Sorry for the “Oblivion” mis-spell You, MovieGeek2013 are not correct. The IMAX versions of non-IMAX movies are not reformatted to fill the whole screen, at least not in this AMC “LIEMAX” theater. That is the problem and rip-off. I guess I didn’t mention that the image was in “regular” format.. with about 15 feet of white screen SHOWING on each side of the image… not masked!! The speakers on each side of the screen were not used.. just the center speakers..and the surround.. and the image was clear.. but washed-out compared to the presentation in the regular theater. I’ve written the manager and she said the IMAX technicians are taking a look.
WE ARE BEING RIPPED OFF.

I live next to the theaters in Kips Bay and have NEVER gone to a movie there where there wasn’t a problem… from the wrong frame on the projector for HUGO… through my recent, but certainly enlightening visit to view OBLIVIAN the past couple days.
On Monday AM I went to see the film in IMAX. The sound was so loud during the previews that it shook the seats. I’ve seen many IMAX presentations.. and at this theater.. BUT this was incredible. Instead of waiting until the film started… (and not enjoy it).. I reported it to the Manager. He did offer to turn the sound down.. but told him I didn’t want to spoil it for the 20 other people.. who might want it that way. (Turns out. they just suffered.) I received my $12 refund.. the “morning” senior price. Then, yesterday went back to see OBLIVIAN in the theater No. 9 – next to the IMAX theater.. at 11 AM $7. During the previews I was aware that the balance of sounds on the screen were swayed way over to the left.. but thought the film would be OK. It wasn’t!! All the dialog… in spite of where the characters were on the screen.. was coming from the LEFT side. (The over-all surround sound.. and music.. and film.. were so good I waited to report it until after the movie.) On the way out I decided to peek into the IMAX theater and see how the sound was there. Low and behold… the film was not in widescreen… AND.. the screen sound was mono… NOT stereo!! (And.. I felt the film was overly bright on the screen.. washing some of the beautiful color out. The sound level, though, was acceptable.) Then.. as it turned out… OBLIVIAN was also playing in theater No. 7.. so took a peek. There is WAS playing in widescreen… BUT.. the screen sound was mono… not stereo….
I spoke with Doug, the manager, who is a technical film buff.. like I am. (I mentioned I enjoy HOW the film is projected even more than the story/stars.) He said that other people HAD mentioned the over-powering volume in the IMAX theater and he listened to my sound problems.. and said that they do have problems with speakers.
BUT…. why is the public being subjected to these faults. It seems that there is no inspection of each theater by a qualified person to see that all is in working order..both for the film.. and for the projection/sound/lighting instead of waiting for the customer to point out the problems.

WE'RE NOT GETTING WHAT WE DESERVE>>>!!

I just remembered… not only was the movie not in “widescreen” format.. but.. the screen was NOT MASKED on either side of the image. Bare white screen showing??????????

SOMEONE IS NOT DOING THEIR JOB!!!!

It seems AMC is NOT playing an IMAX movie and charging IMAX prices. Someone needs to know.. Any ideas??
