Located in the Thornbury district of Melbourne, this opened as the Regent Theatre on 8th August 1925.

It was designed by Sam Millsom who specialised in fibrous plasterwork, although he was not a trained architect. A feature on the façade is a large bass-relief featuring a ploughman and his rearing horses. It was built for F.W. Thring’s Associated Theatres Pty. Ltd. and presented films and vaudeville acts on its large stage.

In 1926 it was taken over by Hoyts and re-named Hoyts Regent Theatre.

It was equipped with a Western Electric sound system in August 1929. The Regent Theatre was unheated until 1946 when architectural firm Cowper, Murphy and Associates supervised the installation of a gas-fired plenum system and carried out other minor alterations to the theatre. Hoyts purchased the freehold of the theatre at this time - Notes by Ken Roe

 •
Nice looking deco type not a original but looks great.

 •
In the early-1940’s, the auditorium’s side walls were covered with fabric and the ceiling was altered. In the fall of 1956, the auditorium was remodeled to allow films in wide screen Todd-AO. “South Pacific” ran for seven months in 1958 and “West Side Story” ran for nine months in 1961.

In 1962, the auditorium was basically gutted with the proscenium removed as it was remodeled to show 3-strip Cinerama films.

The original projection booth remains at the top of the balcony, but new booths were added at the front of the balcony. Since Cinerama ended, the center front booth continues to be used.

 •
This photo in the display glass window is that of the 1955 curved Todd-AO screen set up on stage for ‘Oklahoma’. It is labeled D-150 1968 curved screen. The huge wrap around UA D-150 screen came out of the stage at the top and curved out into the side seats with curtains .Hope they change the wording or photo some day. They moved the 70mm projection booth down to the back rear seating area now the lobby for 70mm D-150. I was there and always remember the large curved presentation in stereo surround sound. Too bad the Netflick/American Cinematheque people did not put in a curved screen replacement for the new look. At least the new screen is a larger flat/scope screen with masking better then the small one that was put in on the last fatal remodel job.

TODD AO 70mm equipment was installed and full length curtains were placed around the auditorium walls, including the foyer.

Cleopatra opened in TODD AO on Feb 28, 1964 and ran until April 16, 1965. When the run of “Cleopatra” ended The theatre was then re-named the Paris and “The Sound of Music” played to packed houses until it closed in Dec 20, 1967. The theatre was closed on Jan 28, 1970, and demolished a short time later.
