I was the first operator after the complete gutting of the original cinema. I fitted new screen with high quality Dolby sound. Cinemeccanica projector, Philips cake stand. I have uploaded some photos taken just before opening for the first time. It was a really nice cinema, very cozy and comfortable. Sadly I never made any profit, the public simply was not interested, why I don’t know. Looks like no one else made any money either. Enjoy the pictures.
I remember going to the last film to be shown. It was very cold, as the boiler had run out of oil. At the start of the show the tabs would not open and the projectionist has to run down and open them by hand. I recall very few in the audience that sad last night.
Not a cinema I really liked much. A real barn of a place with the screen quite high. A long narrow hall if I recall.
I worked at ABC Frior St a few years before the Granby closed. It looked to us at the time that ABC really wanted it closed. They would give it mostly poor films with Frior St. getting the best. On the few times it would get a good film it did quite well. I always remember the balcony would rock when people walked around.
Amazing, I ran the cinema and had a flat shown in the top of this picture. You can still see my TV aerials and rotator.
I have uploaded a video to my YouTube channel filmed at the time I worked there as a projectionist. https://youtu.be/Dj02mtEqbRU
The projection room is above the triple windows.

I almost became the first operator of this cinema but the council gave the lease to Richard as I had no experience of operating a cinema at that time.
