I agree that The Birds projection was great, much superior to the 35MM print the New Beverly showed about a year ago. The person who interviewed Tippi Hedren should have found out who was in the audience and announced them: Oscar winner George Chakiris was there and was completely ignored.
On my way to the Egyptian Theatre on 1/20, while wearing my IRIS cap and jacket, I checked to see the status of the Cirque boutique just outside the Dolby. As I suspected, the store was virtually stripped bare except for a few trinkets and coffee table books. I hope the Dolby will bring in some good acts/shows and puts discount tixs on Goldstar.
Correction: The Classic Card offer is no longer being offered. I received the Cards each in a clear plastic
box with tinsel, a info card, and the actual card, each decked out in a red ribbon.
The Cards can be used by anyone as there is no name on the Card. LOL, the offer expired on 1/18 and actually allowed a purchase of up to 100 Cards(that’s 400 people). I hope some worthy group took advantage of this fantastic offer.
IRIS closed on 1/19/13, so I snared a $68 tix on Goldstar and went on 1/9. I had one of the best seats in the house, 2nd row in 1st balcony with two empty seats in front of me. I only give the show 3 out of 5 stars and Danny Elfman apparently phoned in the music-mediocre at best. I’ve been raiding the 75% off IRIS merchandise, sold both in the theatre and the outside boutique. Kudos to Cirque as not all items are made in China. My IRIS logo light zipper jacket, for only $18, was MADE IN USA.
I attended a 12/23 Sunday afternoon showing of the Hobbitt in HFR and it was beautiful. Tragically, only into the second week of a blockbuster, there were only 27 of us attendees.
I was at the Alex in Glendale last November for their annual Three Stooges festival. In the short where the boys are football players at Gilmore Field you can see the electric sign atop the Fairfax. No one has been able to tell me when the sign came down.
I Metro in about once a month or so to go to the Los Feliz. They get good movies and I saw “Beast of the Southern Wild” in one of their small screening rooms before all the Oscar buzz. They have several nice indie film festivals each year. The theatre serves a valuable neighborhood purpose and I appreciate the $5.50 senior price.
Purist critics have no concept of how difficult it is to keep theatre lights on in 2013. Don’t shun, attend.

I was at the Henson Studio(built by Chaplin)on Sunday for their Golden Globes viewing party. Julie Newmar was presented an award by George Chakiris and Tippi Hedren came up to my table and we had a nice chat. At 82, she is still glamorous, with impeccable hair, makeup, nails, shoes, etc. At 16 I had a super crush on her and finally met her.
Bargain Alert! Until 1/18/13 the Cap is offering a Classic Movie Card for $25: You get four admissions which can be used individually or all at once, 4 popcorns and 4 sodas and can be used until 3/6 for Peter Pan, Mulan or Lady and the Tramp.
I ordered 4 sets online and they ship in 3-5 days. I called the # listed and of course learned that the cards are non transferable. The person on the credit card purchase only can use it + guests. I’m not sure if one can bring say 7 guests and use 2 cards. These cards are not sold at the box office.
Around 1969 a friend and I saw a couple of soft-core movies at the TODAY. The posted minimum age was 17 or 18 and my friend, an ex-Navy veteran of 28, could not believe he was carded!
I’d estimate it was 85-90% filled. One theater staff member wished they did the 25-cent special once a week as the concession sales were off the charts.
The “Godfather” screening was great. TV viewers eat your heart out. FYI, the costume collection, on loan, has been removed; however, there are two display cases showing old Grauman’s programs/tickets.
Next Monday, 9/17, “The Wizard of Oz” screens one hour earlier at 7PM. Tickets on sale now.
The Vista and its sister venue a half-mile away, Los Feliz 3, converted to digital around Sept 6; however, the Vista was allowed to keep its 35MM projector as some directors wanted it for special screenings.
“The Godfather” showing at 8PM Sep10 is sold out, but I do have a few extra tix if anyone wants to come. Even if you don’t stay for the whole movie the lobby display of Hollywood costumes is worth a peek.
I can’t believe there were only 13 of us at the El Capitan on a Saturday night for the 9:20PM screening of Arjun: The Warrior Prince! Yes, it was in Hindu, but the English subtitles were very readable and the story very simple to follow. To its credit the organist Ed Vodicka was not sent home early but played for the pre-show.
Los Angeles/Orange County has a huge and affluent Indian population. Did Disney not market to them? Does Disney not cross-market the El Capitan to the millions of visitors to Disneyland, never mind all the Disney theme parks worldwide? LA Times says we are having a banner tourism year and the El Cap did have Arjun on their marquee with the showing time listed for thousands of passersby to see. Very depressing.
FYI, theater management can’t wait for the scaffolding to come down, but apparently in retrofitting the office bldg they had to install additional steel rods and the such.

8/30 follow up: The El Cap is experimenting with “Rollback Thursday”, bringing back “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, for a 7:30P showing. Everyone paid $10 and got a popcorn and beverage(16 oz. bottles in about 6 choices).
Pulling out the stops, organist Rob Richards, who normally only plays on Sat & Sun, was brought in to play before the movie and got a rousing applause from the estimated 275 in attendance. 5 or 6 nice door prizes were awarded, including 2 tickets to a Red Carpet event.
Get on their email list and learn about special screenings, such as the Indian animation “Arjun”, showing only at 9:20P for a few days starting 9/3.
In 1950, when I was four my parents took me to see “Cinderella”. Happily the El Capitan brought it back in its original 4x3 format, and I caught the final 4:45P
show on 8/30, along with about 125 other patrons(surprised how many young adults were there).
The kids squealed when the confetti cannons from the boxes rained down colored discs, and after the movie loved picking them up. The lobby always has great displays and it was amusing to see a fearful little girl being gently prompted to have her photo taken by the little fish in the Finding Nemo display, as there was a large fearsome shark stalking the fish; courage prevailed and the little girl got my bravery medal.
The 25-cent classic movies are presented in the big theatre, preempting their normal movie on traditionally the slowest movie night. This 85th anniversary promotion rolls back the price to its 1927 opening; happily, the concession counter does a huge business as patrons getting in for essentially free splurge on popcorn and drinks.
Nice to see about 160 people for the 8:50PM show this past Tuesday for “Dark Knight”. Veteran actor Clu Gulager, a regular at the Beverly Cinema, showed at the Vista recently.
A couple days ago I was on the Hollywood & Highland subway platform and eavesdropped on two Cirque du Soleil employees. As I suspected the “IRIS” show is drawing only about 1200 people per performance and at least 1500 is needed for break even.
Attendance will not improve until the city of L.A. rousts unlicensed vendors, obnoxious vagrants, panhandlers, aggressive tour sellers and assorted idiots. They also need to remove the kiosks directly on the street as they clog Hollywood Blvd and impede pedestrian traffic.
Brick and mortar merchants why have you not demanded action? I do see a number of prosperous looking tourist families(quite a few German speaking)who look like deer caught in the headlights as they try to navigate this unholy gauntlet.
FYI, I do spend my money frequently at the Egyptian, El Capitan and sometimes the Chinese, but many of these bummy street people litter and have zero sense of responsibility. Johhny Grant must be spinning in his grave.
