Merrylands Mall Cinema
The exhibitors struggled on, and after a few months had a windfall with the release of “Rocky”, which drew big crowds. Various programming experiments included Greek films on Sundays, an Elvis Festival, and movie/disco events with live performers. Just before the Mall cinema opened, a full time repertory cinema was launched in the city (by me), and before long other venues in the Sydney area introduced similar policies at Glebe, North Sydney, Paddington and elsewhere. Merrylands would also try the format and continued screening for 6 years until closure on 16 October 1983, when a satisfactory lease renewal could not be arranged with Stockland. Hoyts built an 8-screen multiplex next door in 2000, but this had a similarly short lifespan – closing in 2007 when the Mall wanted to extend.
