Hoyts Goulburn
Although Purves had planned for his theaters to be totally independent of major exhibitor association, he realized during construction that the buying power of Broadway Theatres Ltd. - operators of the rival Empire in town – would make it difficult for him to obtain quality product. To counter this threat, he merged his Goulburn interest with Hoyts and Greater Union - then operating as a combine. Purves retained a financial interest and remained as ‘general manager’ for 20 years, but Hoyts would physically operate the venue from its opening until shortly before closure. Greater Union remained a silent partner, even after taking over the Empire and renaming it the Odeon.
