Liberty Theatre
When the biggest hit (and Oscar winner for Best Film) of 1933 was released in Australia, the distributor demanded premium rentals from exhibitors. Some, like Katoomba Theatres Ltd. baulked, feeling the price too exorbitant, allowing Ted Betts – then operating both Leura and Blackheath – a promotional windfall. Usually Blue Mountains film fans needed to visit the main center of Katoomba in order to catch a notable attraction. On this occasion the situation was reversed. (“Cavalcade” did belatedly play the Katoomba Empire six months later when hire terms were relaxed). Betts continued operating Leura until mid-1934.
