Regent Theatre
On 20th December Hoyts finally announced their ‘talkie’ opening date – 5th January 1929. The very next day Union Theatres attempted a coup, with large advertisements appearing for the Lyceum announcing that “The Jazz Singer" would be opening Boxing Day – 26th December! Hoyts furiously reminded Western Electric of their contractual obligation to have both theaters ready simultaneously. After hurried negotiations a compromise was reached, and with work hastened at the Regent, both theaters would open with sound on 29th December 1928.
