Regent Theatre
Regent Theatre air-conditioning cooling tower in 1934 viewed across Bathurst Street from George Street (colorized). In the early 1970s I joined a maintenance inspection of this wooden structure built high atop the Regent’s stage. Access was via a vertical wooden ladder (not in view) from atop the fly-tower. To climb it required me to summon all available courage. Reaching the top, I did not however step off onto the cooling tower ‘roof’, as the height and sway of the structure in the breeze was more than I could handle. A few years later it was demolished due to structural safety concerns. Regent Theatre cooling tower (13/08/1934), [A-00037784].
