War Bond Gala 19th November 1942: Recently awarded a Victoria Cross for gallantry under fire in the Middle East (leading to the loss of a leg), Lieutenant A. R. Cutler (later Sir Roden) had just taken over as Secretary of the Returned Services League (N.S.W. Branch). In this capacity (and also as a war hero) he played a leading role in the activities on this evening. He would later become a regular attendee at such functions. As the longest serving Governor of New South Wales (1966 – 1981) Vice Regal Premiere duties were a regular feature of his calendar. (He was normally assigned to an aisle seat involving minimum stairs, in deference to his war injury.)
