Regent Theatre
Regent orchestra conductor Maurice Gutteridge on 14th May 1937. Colorized main photo by Sam Hood - Mitchell Collection State Library of NSW. The Regent opened 9th March 1928 with Signor Ezio Kost in charge of the music. A few months later he quit. Ernest G. Mitchell was then brought up from Melbourne until 29th December 1928 when the introduction of ‘talkies’ put live entertainment on the backburner, apart from organ interludes. (Mitchell then moved to Melbourne as musical director of the Regent when it opened in March 1929). Stan Porter served for five years 1930-35 except for a six month baton swap with Will Cade from Melbourne in 1933/4. Will Quintrell conducted 1938-40 returning 1943-45. Roy Maling had a six month run 1942/43. First Violinist Val Pursehouse often took over as conductor to cover holidays and other absences.
