Regent Theatre
Last big film attraction at the Regent was a record 24 week run with the rock opera “Tommy” – the only film ever released with ’Quintaphonic Sound’. Elton John, on one of his regular visits to Sydney, attended the premiere on Tuesday 8th April 1975. Having launched Stereophonic Sound presentation with “The Robe” in 1953, the Regent was now - 22 years later - introducing Australia to a new era of immersive Dolby-esque sound, with special speakers installed behind the screen and in the left and right rear corners of the auditorium - a configuration not unlike the 5.1 Surround of today.
