I think the Smodcastle has moved out. I’ve driven past the building a few times in the last few years and there is heavy construction happening inside. Thank goodness the exterior doesn’t seem to be in danger but looks like the inside has been completely gutted. I never got a chance to check it out, sadly.
Any insight to this recent construction is appreciated.
The New York Film Academy have moved in since 2023. They currently own this theatre. The stage and screen are still intact, as are the seats. Not sure about the ‘Gaslight" in back but the school is using it’s facilities for screenings, so at least it’s being utilized properly instead of being razed.
The Tulsa Movies 8 was not a second run theatre at first. It was actually one of the first multi-plexes that brought DTS and other advanced sound to movie goers. City Slickers, Cutthroat Island, Maverick and more played their first runs there.
Cinemark took it over in the late 90s, I think 1997 perhaps? Before the AMC 20 opened off of Yale, thus replacing the Southroads and the Annex 7, the Movies 8 was where to see independent and art house films.
Despite becoming a second run multiplex, many independent features would come and go, from The Midnight Meat Train, to Bottle Shock and more.
In the end, it was a pretty trashy joint. nothing was cared for or repaired.
When I visited the Bay area a couple of years ago, I stayed in Mission at a friend’s and saw this theatre (along with the others that still adorn the blvd) daily.
Stayed (unawares until too late) in the Tenderloin district. This theatre would technically be listed as in that area. It' still there, surrounded by street dwellers.
I visited this site in 2023 and 2024. It’s just a shell. No business, no life. Nothing. I pray it stays that way long enough for someone to come and revive interest.
I see plans for demolition but isn’t there a way that the historic society or conservation can designate this beautiful movie house? H hope it’s not too late.
How charming! I visited “Cliff’s Variety” two years ago and never knew of it’s history as a movie house. Great little space which does have a look that gives insight to it’s past.
Just google searched this theatre address - I sincerely doubt the existence of this building. Looks like new apartments were built over the space. Please feel free to tell me I’m wrong - I welcome it.
Just drove past today - and doors were open. It’s a woodcutting establishment now, but the auditorium space is very apparent and clear. Though the inside is gutted, the indoor area is still intact and could be reverted.
Still there, still boarded up and ‘tagged’. Still beautiful though, and yes, I hope someone comes and saves it. It’s such a shame for such a beautiful building to stay dormant like this.
Thank you CTC - I am unable to edit my last comment but want to re-iterate that I meant this land IS for sale now. $40mil is extreme for such a small plot.

When the Fox was twinned it still showed premium films. Network and Logan’s Run were paired there at one point.

Woe to the public
This theatre still shuttered?

I’m glad it’s still standing.
What is happening with the interior of this building?
The Palmer building is still there, just unrecognizable.

Well that just TEARS it. It was on the National Registry yet it was STILL bulldozed? Who’s ass do we have to get fired for this?!
Now a goodwill but might be a closed building that was last used as goodwill.
Street views don’t seem to show much of this theatre. Any pointers to it’s OG status are greatly appreciated.
I’ll believe that when I see it. A shame that churches continue to take this over and no money coming in for the arts.
Is this building still present? It looks like it’s been demolished. At the very least it’s completely unrecognizable.

What’s happening with this space at the moment?

A photograph of the current interior would be appreciated. CStefanic, Los Angeles.
Were it as possible, would the original venue size (seating and single screen use) be restorable?
