The only memory I have of this theater, and the one and only time I remember going there, was to see a film. It was in the year 1972. I had just turned 18 years of age. The film was rated X and the seating was reserved in which they assigned you a seat. I remember locating my assigned seat to view the film and saw many “well to do†others finding their seats. I even remember a few women with fur coats on! I mean after all it was the Rittenhouse Square Theater!

I, later at the age of 19, worked in a fast food restaurant and had a special order for a roast beef sandwich to which I replied loud enough for everyone standing in line to hear……
“One Last Tango In Paris Coming Up………No Butter On The Buns!â€
Only a couple of people got it, you could tell by the looks on their faces and their laughter
The others were left standing without a clue!
My fondest memories of this theater was my first attendance at it to see John Water’s “Pink Flamingos”. I also remember seeing “The Boys in the Band” for the first time at this establishment. I also took my Mom to see “Rocky Horror Picture Show” there. She got the biggest kick out of all the audience participation there. At the time it was “The” place to see the film. I’m glad to see that it’s still standing.
The most memorable moment I had of this theater was going there to see “Woodstock” The movie was rated “R” and my parents wouldn’t take me to see it. I was only 15 and you had to be accompanied by an adult at the time if you were under 17. I must have looked old enough because the theater let me in. I sat there and watched it twice! The movie was over 3 hours long.
I still remember attending the “Kent Theater” as a child. I saw “The Ten Commandments” and “Ben Hur” there.The theater was huge inside and I recall there, instead of having a balcony, had stadium type seating that started at floor level and went up to the ceiling. It was a beautiful theater with a large chandelier hanging from the middle of the ceiling. I drove past the site where it stood last summer only to see a vacant lot. Such a shame for a gem such as this!
I remember The Midway very fondly as a child. There were two films that I saw there that I can recall. The first “Mary Poppins” and a few years later I went with my Dad, the only time i can ever remember going to the movies with him to see “Dr Zhivago”. I don’t remember there being a balcony there, but i guess there was according to reports. One of the films that was shown there that I really wanted to see but they told me I was too young was “Valley Of The Dolls” Back then they didn’t have ratings for films. “Valley” had a rating of “M” for mature audiences. I finally saw it later in life and would have loved to have seen it on “the big screen”.
I remember as a child seeing this movie theater and although I never saw any movies there I do remember it’s existence. From the picture posted in the prior post , it looks as though the theater was built even before the Frankford El was built. I do remember it being about one third down the block from Allegheny and was literally spitting distance from the Midway on Allegheny Ave. And i did know from friends that it had a balcony in it. It became a department store before I ever had a chance to attend.
I remember this theater being one of the first movie theaters I ever attended as a child. I remeber seeing Pinocchio there and being absolutely terrified of the coming attractions for “Whatever Happenned To Baby Jane”. At the time admission was 25 cents for children under 12 and if you were an adult or over 12 years of age admission was 35 cents. I still remember the theater closing down for renovations. I never got a chance to visit the theater after it re-opened. I do remember that the outside got a real nice face lift with lots and lots of bright new neon. Last summer I deceided to drive down to where it stood and all that was there was an empty lot.
I was unaware that it burnt down in the 80’s.
