The last time I went to the Pantages it was a double feather in the after noon. Must have been 1960. They were ‘Sink the Bismark" and “The Blob”. Lots of free parking but not many cars. The price was about 60 plus cents. What a come down for the grand ole theater?
I believe this building was torn down in early 1953. A theater was being demolished east of Vine on the south side of Hollywood Blvd when I first moved there in 53.
Was this the Academy Theatre where the 1948 (March 1949) awards were hosted by Robert Montgomery? My source is “The Viewers Guide to the Academy Awards” by Joseph Stewart, 1995. It just says Academy Theater, Hollywood.
I was living in Hollywood when the Warner’s theater was showing “This is Cinerama' for the years 1953/56. After 56 or 57 they
started showing other pictures. Correct me.
The Hollywood was a kind of dumpy picture show while I lived there in 1953/55, but was open all night. I saw “On the waterfront” in 1954/5 after working the 2nd shift at a Standerd Station nearby.
Of all the shows on the blvd, it was the last choice for second run pictures. However further down the street was a late nighter called the “News-View” that only showed news reels. Later in 1953 because of of up and coming television competition it started to show 3rd rate movies and I noticed a change in the name by dropping the “S” and the dash to read “New View”.At the time I thought it was very clever.
I cant find any thing about the Academy theater just east of Highland and across the street from the all night Hollywood theater. I lived at 1775 N Orchid street in 1953/55 and walked to all the shows on Hollywood Blvd. It was lit up like Christmas every night. Heading east on the blvd’d south side I can only remember the Paramount, Hollywood, Egyption and the News-View. The last one only showed news reels. Can anybody name the ones from Highland to Vine on the North side? I think there were four counting the big Warners theater showing “Cinerama” for those 3 years.
